Advanced Placement English/Honors English III is a year-long, 1 credit class with no prerequisites. The expectation is that students will take both AP exams at the end of their senior year.There are several reasons a person might take this class, which is reported to be more difficult than Freshman English in college:1. Pay about $320 to take two tests and then escape the woes of Freshman English in college if you pass (Missoula will give you 12 credits if you pass, Tech and Bozeman waive Freshman classes, most colleges accept passing scores as credit).2. Learn a ton of words no one else even realizes are in existence.3. Become a literature snob.4. Be completely overprepared for college writing assignments.5. Challenge yourself to work with difficult material, think difficult thoughts, and express yourself conclusively in writing.
Vocabulary Progression in AP English: Quarter 2
Beginning the first full week of class in 2nd quarter, students in AP English are given 25-25 terms taken from the “List of 90”. On the Friday of the following week, students will be given a quiz on spelling and definitions for those terms.
Each week words will be added, and each Friday the quiz is cumulative, however, the skills assessed on the quiz increase in complexity. The first quiz on a set of words will be spelling and definitions. The second quiz on a set of words will assess identification of a term in text AND spelling and definitions. The third quiz on a set of terms will assess usage to include acute part of speech incorporation in writing AND proper identification AND spelling and definitions. After the third quiz on a set of words, anything goes. The table below will possibly be helpful. If you don’t understand which material will be assessed in which week, ask so you can properly prepare.

Advanced Placement English Homework, Semester TwoParaphrase (using words you understand and sentence structures that are grammatically correct and make sense to you, and that might actaully come from your own mouth) two sections per week, Monday and Wednesday, of Jonathan Swift's "Tale of a Tub" in your spiral homework binder. If you get stuck, lost or don't understand, do the best you can with it, leave a ***HELP*** and an arrow in the margin, and keep going. As long as you make a concerted effort, recognize and identify your own problem areas, and write legibly, you will earn all the points, even if you are regulalry wrong. You will get better at it over time. Homework will be stamped every Tuesday and Thursday at the beginning of class, and then we will go over the passage sentence by sentence on Fridays, and you will fix your mistakes and problem areas.Remember to remain on the literal level, and do NOT summarize. If Swift has written 15 sentences, you will have 15 sentences or more, because if you are using your own words and voice, your sentences will be shorter than Swift's.Each corrected homework passage is worth ten daily assignment points. If you do not do the homework at all, you will FAIL THIS CLASS. Uncorrected passages will earn five points.The only thing that goes in your homework binder is Swift-related paraphrasing. That means you need to have a different source to hold your junk and pull paper out of. Sometimes I collect the binders and keep them for days, which means you can't get your other stuff out of it. So don't put other stuff in it.Please do not type your paraphrases; I will give you zero credit. You need to become accustomed to writing with a pen/pencil because you will have to do it for 4 hours straight on the AP English exams.
